Exploring Fashion - Photo Shoots and Modeling

Thursday we visited the studio of Emery Street, a clothing manufacturer in Emeryville.  Emery Street  produces knit dresses for other fashion companies like Boston Proper, Lesley Evers and Celebrating Grace. 
Susan, Emery Street's head designer and owner invited us to come and observe a photo shoot in her studio.  She was having many of her knit dresses photographed for her website www.emerystreet.com.

Our Laurie Ann was on hand to help coach the models.  Modeling takes effort and thought. We found out that learning to use your body to make the clothes look good is not as easy as it appears on TV.  And also that photo shoots take time.  It's not all glitz, glam and glamor.  Still, it's fun to be involved!

After we returned to home base, we decided to do a short and much simpler photo shoot of our own.  The girls modeled the clothing they wore to camp and practiced smiling, sitting, standing and using different body positions.  Here are our final shots, edited and chosen by each student.

Exploring Fashion - Emery Street Visit

 Here is our group at Emery Street - the studio of Susan Weeks.  Susan designs and manufactures knit dresses for Chico's, Boston Proper, Lesley Evers and Celebrating Grace.  In our visit she explained her process, showed us some of her designs and gave us a fabulous tour of her studio. 

 

Susan along with her daughter Claire and Claire's friend created several hand made note books for each of the girls to take home along with Susan's favorite mechanical pencil.   Susan also teaches Fashion Illustration at UC Davis, so we were in for a treat when she showed the girls a few of her techniques.

Exploring Fashion - Fashion Camp for Spring Break

Over the next couple of weeks, my colleague Laurie Ann Bishop and I will be teaching a Fashion Camp to several young students.  We will be exploring the world of fashion in the Bay Area.  The students will become Fashion Bloggers, visit design studios and experience the excitement of Jean Paul Gaultier at the De Young Museum in San Francisco.

Get ready for a week of special blog posts from guest bloggers.  The first week will be Maya, Lucy, Emma, Cate and Emilie.  I can't wait for you to meet them.

The first on visit our list will be to interview Colleen Quen, in her San Francisco Studio.  Later in the week, we will visit Emery Street where we will meet designers Susan Weeks and Ribbon Artist Candace Kling.
